Making Friends With The Angel of Death
Mexico is a magical place!
It is most famous in the United States for Cinco de Mayo and Dia De Los Muertos. I guess we Americans love to drink and celebrate Halloween.
What if I told you that Dia De Los Muertos wasn't just "a" day, but more of a belief about all of life?
The ancient Toltecs, who pre-dated the Aztecs, were looked upon as (loosely translated) The Enlightened Ones. The Toltecs were skilled artisans who revered knowledge, enlightenment, and truth above all else. Some consider The Toltec to be the pinnacle of the Mexican civilization.
One of the gifts from the Toltec teachings is about The Angel of Death. Many religions, from all of the world, have their own version of The Angel of Death. I am partial to the Toltec version and find it to be beautiful...even comforting.
The Toltecs teach that The Angel of Death is your friend.
She grants you all that you will ever have in life. Your body, your friends, your family, your children, your possessions, even life itself. These are all things that The Angel of Death loans us upon our birth. One day, at the time of Her choosing, She will come to us and ask us to give back all that She has loaned us.
That doesn’t sound so bad, right?
The Angel of Death doesn’t sound so scary now, does it? That’s because in Toltec teachings The Angel of Death is a teacher to be revered and respected…and our friend. She grants us many wonderful things for us to enjoy and savor over a lifetime, but like any other loan, eventually it must be paid back.
If your best friend loaned you a beautiful beach house for a year, would you make sure you enjoyed every minute of that year to the fullest? Or would you spend the entire year living in mourning of the fact that eventually you will have to leave? Would you walk on the beach, play in the surf, collect shells, and soak up the sun? Or would you stay inside, refusing to enjoy all of the beauty outside simply because it was only available for a certain time?
*SPOILER ALERT: Your life IS that year at the beach
Granted, the year at the beach comes with some finite terms. But then again, so does life! No one escapes death. We are all bound by the same rules of mortality. BUT…we decide how our life is lived!
You can either choose to befriend The Angel of Death, thank Her daily for all of the wonderful things She has loaned you, hold Her hand when the time to repay that debt comes, and regale Her with stories of how you fully appreciated Her generosity. Or, you can pretend that She doesn’t exist, squander all She has loaned you, and live in fear of Her until one day you meet Her once again.
The choice is yours to make
Personally, I hope you choose to befriend Her. I hope you choose acceptance of what is, so that you can savor all the goodness that it brings. I hope you choose freedom from fear of the inevitable. I hope you choose a relationship with your entire life, even the ending, and not just the parts you want to accept.
Peace be with you,
Teresa
